About The Soldier and the Doll

Taking lead from popular cartoons, director Stephen Crutchfield used saturated colors, a lively mimicking score, and action (there is no dialog in the film) to tell the story of a young boy who retaliates against his sister after he finds one of his toy soldiers dressed in a pink dress and missing a leg.  The film was inspired by events from Crutchfield’s childhood – specifically, when he and his childhood best friend would make his best friend’s sister cry by standing her Cabbage Patch Kids on their heads (thereby making the blood rush to their heads, increasing the chance of a hemorrhage – who knew that could happen to Cabbage Patch Kids?) Of course, such a torturous deed required payback, and thus began a cycle of retaliation. While THE SOLDIER AND THE DOLL does not have any head standing Cabbage Patch Kids, there are moments of sibling bullying, and of course, sibling love.
